The very best of L.A. & Orange County

Are you looking for a spot to share a cup o’ tea or two? Whether you’re seeking a relaxing solo sip, an exotic blend, or a classic high tea experience, there are a wide variety of delightful tea rooms around which make a perfect stop after a day of shopping or a day behind your desk.

Chado Tea Room

Chado Tea Room now has four locations: a sunny indoor/outdoor spot in Little Tokyo downtown, Pasadena, Hollywood, and now an Old Town Torrance location. The Chado Tea Room is considered to be where Los Angeles’ love affair with tea began. They offer over 300 different specialty teas from black, white, green, Earl Grey, oolongs, and Chai. Their dining rooms offer sandwiches, salads, small plates, and desserts. Chado co-founder Devan Shah is dedicated to introducing Los Angeles residents to the plethora of interesting, flavorful, health-benefitting teas available around the world – while serving up some pretty stellar scones, too.

Nirvana Tea and Herbs

On the westside, Nirvana Tea and Herbs pours house blend and other teas with an eye to the shop’s tag line of “Tea, Herbs, and Rock n’ Roll.” Founder and general manager Joe Recsnik is decidedly “into” tea and he also has a master’s degree in East Asian medicine, and a strong desire to introduce customers to the world of tea and herbal healing. The shop is really a lounge, with music, tea service, and even tea-flight tastings. There are also lectures offered on the health benefits of tea, its restorative properties, and herbal cures.

Tea Station

At Tea Station in Gardena, Calif., you’ll find plenty of tea, and also plentiful, tasty noodles. A branch of a casual, lively Asian restaurant, the mammoth tea menu can be enjoyed alone or accompanied by teriyaki and ramen. There are even tea-flavored noodles and snacks, from meat-centric dishes such as Pu-Ehr flavored beef stew with green tea noodles to tea flavored fried taro balls. As for the teas themselves, the wide variety is somewhat astonishing: there’s everything from Barley Milk Tea to Mango Green Tea.

Elise’s Tea Room

In Long Beach, you’ll find a charming, elegant throw-back of a tea room at Elise’s Tea Room. Embroidered chairs, trinkets, and lovely chandeliers adorn the space, where a full menu is offered and there are both children’s portions and gluten-free options. The spot began as a homage to lush teas remembered, served by the owners English grandmother. It’s evolved into a full-service restaurant with a strong emphasis on tea, and English tea-time favorites such as scones and quiches. Or try their jam plate, with Devonshire cream, lemon curd, and blackberry jam. With a renowned pastry chef and beautiful teapots, this cozy spot would be right at home in the heart of London.
