The very best of L.A. & Orange County

You won’t be surprised to find cool shops on Melrose Avenue. After all, the street has been a staple for Los Angeles fashion, decor, and style for years. Here are a crop of stores that make browsing and buying plenty of fun.

Cosmo and Nathalia: Black and Cosmo and Nathalia: Glamsquad

For cutting edge contemporary fashion it’s hard to top Cosmo and Nathalia. Made in LA, their dual gender apparel and outrageously fun street wear is created by Cosmo “QueenOfMelrose” and Nathalia Gaviria. Best of all, the designers have two shops on the avenue to fit fashion-forward shoppers of all kinds. There are capes, dresses, and catsuits for women; ponchos that you’ll spot nowhere else, and generally just a large variety of very cool clothes that are pure cutting-edge fashion. Find leather and fur jackets, vegan jackets, sequined pants and jackets, stretchy faux fur jumpsuits, and everything rock n’ roll and irreverent in Cosmo and Nathalia: Glamsquad; while chic androgynous wear is a mainstay at Cosmo and Nathalia: Black.

At Flasher, a hot spot for trendy clothing and shoes, brands such as Black Pyramid and the Italian clothing line Happiness are included in a high fashion mix. Customized, hand-painted, and studded denim vests are another must-have at this sleek boutique that justifiably calls itself “The Dopest Boutique in Hollywood.” The store carries hot designers like Rik Villa, London-based lines such as Sons of Heroes, and one of a kind pieces from local designers – get them while you can.

From quilted jackets to high top sneakers with a built-in-wedge and stretchy leather dresses, IIJIN has something for everyone. Accessories, bags, outerwear, shoes and clothing are great for both guys and girls. Men shop for hip tailored suit jackets, women for the perfect dinner or party dress. Check out cute velcro smiley face patches, too. IJIN means “precious” in Korean, and each clothing item is treated like a curated work of art.

New Profanity

New Profanity may carry the most profane, fun, outrageous gifts in all of LA. This boutique carries everything from original art cards to clothing, enamel pens, jewelry, sexy thongs, T-shirts, and pillows. Hilarious style and scatological sayings abound in a store that’s as fresh as it is funny. Calling themselves “100% Unapologetic,” the store warns shoppers that if a little profanity, some dirty jokes, and liberal politics are not your thing, then this may not be your shop. Everything in the store is designed or crafted by artists or small business owners, so shoppers who do revel in the naughty fun can be sure they’re supporting a variety of area artists as well as the store itself.
