Being somewhat new to California, I’m constantly discovering new places and things that reinforce my decision to relocate here. This week was no exception.
I had the privilege of trying out a new location for JUICE | Served Here, which recently opened their 12th location in Lido Marina Village in Newport Beach. Never having visited this complex, I was surprised by how much retail therapy one can accomplish here and how many establishments are planned for the future. Check out this hidden gem of a village next time you’re in the area, or make a special trip for it. It will definitely be worth it!
Wining & Dining
JUICE | Served Here
The 12th location, but the first with a café, from the duo of Alex Matthews and Greg Alterman, who in 2012 founded JUICE | Served Here in Los Angeles. This 35-seat, minimalist-designed café will not only be serving the cold-pressed juices that have made them famous, but also nut milk-based shakes (including one with a macadamia nut base), and tonics custom formulated for different functions – Brain, Immune, Adrenal, Wellness and Calm. In addition, JSH Marina Cafe will serve fresh juice shots designed to address skin and immune system health, energy and digestion, and its renowned range of lemonades, which includes such unconventional flavors as Charcoal, Turmeric Tangerine and Jalapeno.
Breakfast and lunch will be available and will include everything from artfully-created smoothie bowls made with local, nutrient-rich organic produce and finished with healthful toppings to “Smash.” I recommend trying the Avocado Smash – mashed avocado served on a delicious grain bread from Bread Artisan Bakery in Santa Ana, with radish, lemon, olive oil, chili and topped with a perfectly sous vide prepared egg on top. The bread is the perfect base layer for this dish and the egg really tops it off. (No pun intended.) My dining partner really liked the Tomato Smash. The same delicious bread, topped with ricotta, jalapeño and cucumber. The flavors perfectly complement each other.
On this visit we both tried the Simple Greens, a mix of lettuces (no iceberg here) which was touched with a light vinaigrette, and a carrot curry soup, which was the surprise hit of our visit. Perfectly spiced and velvety smooth, this soup is one you’ll be wanting on that next cold/wet day, of which there’s been plenty this year! Finish your visit off with a cappuccino or latte made with beans from Common Room Roasters, a local roaster based in Costa Mesa turning out some incredible beans.
With cozy seating available next to a fireplace, and killer views of the marina, Zinqué is a great place to enjoy a cocktail or two with friends after work. After happy hour has come and gone, be sure to stick around for a bite or two. A variety of charcuterie and cheese offerings are available, as are entrees such as grilled prawns, lasagna or quiche Lorraine. Open for breakfast, lunch, brunch and dinner.
NOBU (COMING SOON)
With restaurants all over the world – including Beijing, Mexico City, Dubai, Monte Carlo and New York, to name a few – Nobu is bringing their elegant style to Lido Marina Village. Known for their Black Cod Miso, Tiradito and Yellowtail Sashimi, among many other great dishes, the food and the views will be second to none.
L’ISOLETTA (COMING SOON)
From the masterminds behind Via Veneto in Santa Monica and Bianconi in L.A. comes L’Isoletta. Calling on their Italian roots, expect to see lots of good, hearth-baked pizzas, homemade pastas and other offerings, all made with locally-sourced produce and imported cheeses from Italy. Also look for an extensive wine list and cocktail menu and awesome table views.
LIDO BOTTLE WORKS (COMING SOON)
Soon to be opened by Newport Beach natives, Lido Bottle Works will have something for every taste. Beers from small batch breweries, select wines by the bottle or glass, and a small plates-style menu made with locally-procured ingredients are planned. Expect to see special events here as well, including live music, winemaker/brewer events, an art gallery and more.
ALCHEMY WORKS: HARBOR HOUSE
The chic 1,300-square-foot space that houses Alchemy Works is full of women’s and men’s clothing, home goods, art, jewelry and footwear, to name a few of the items available from this upscale lifestyle brand. Their second location, the first is in DTLA, has lots of treasures you’ll want to take home with you.
With appearances in O Magazine’s A-List, Cosmo, and InStyle, Bailey 44 has the contemporary and stylish look women demand. The first brick-and-mortar store for this L.A.-designed brand, it serves as the flagship for this rapidly growing company. An in-house florist complements the shopping experience.
Black Optical, with locations in Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Dallas, opened their first California location in Lido Marina Village. Working with designers worldwide, they offer premium eye and sunwear that attempts to bring the best quality, style and aesthetics, combined with unparalleled service, to the California consumer.
CHARLIE & ME
For the pooch that doesn’t have everything (at least not yet) comes Charlie & Me, the hip boutique all the dogs are barking about. This store has bowties and bandanas, beds and blankets, and a whole lot more dog-friendly items you’re going to want to check out if you have a tail-wagging friend or two at home you like to spoil.

Founded by twin brothers Alex & Mike Faherty, their namesake store features women’s and men’s clothing that epitomizes the laid-back lifestyle many Californians enjoy. They offer beach-inspired, ready-to-wear clothing that you’ll want to check out. I spotted several ponchos with my name on them, especially considering the “cold” weather we’ve been having lately.
Started by a young American designer, Jenni Kayne translates her approach to California living in an inviting minimalism you’ll find in her boutiques. With a line of clothing, shoes, accessories and home offerings that translate that style, you’re sure to find that special sweater or perfect black crepe tee you’ve been looking for.
Speaking of tees, you know that one you love, that you’ve rescued from the donation bag too many times to count, that has been with you through thick and thin? Well that’s the type of comfort clothing Marine Layer offers. San Francisco based and designed, they have clothing for guys and gals that truly takes comfort to the next level. Be sure to check out their selection of backpacks, jewelry and home accessories infused with the weekend lifestyle they want everyone to enjoy seven days a week.

Go there and pamper your inner bohemian.
Designer Steven Alan has spent 20 years creating a fashion world that’s strictly based on his subversive take on the classics. The store represents over 20 designers of clothing, handbags and accessories, and also carries a namesake line of men’s and women’s apparel, home and gift items and a line of optical wear.
Founded in 1997 to create fashion-forward tees, Velvet uses only the finest fabrics in their clothing, most manufactured here in the United States. Offering women’s and men’s clothing, a line of denim and accessories that include handbags, jewelry and sunglasses, there’s something here for everyone.
Located within the Alchemy Works: Harbor House space, Warby Parker was launched to address a problem that had been around for decades: glasses were too expensive! By identifying the problem – that one company artificially kept prices high and dominated the eyewear industry – WP decided to create an alternative. They offer higher quality and better-looking prescription eyewear at a fraction of what has been previously available. Lauded by the Wall Street Journal, Fast Company and the New York Times, you’ll want to stop by here, the only Orange County location, next time you need a new pair of specs.
SWEATY BETTY (COMING SOON)
Direct from London comes Sweaty Betty, a line of women’s active wear that’s been keeping the ladies of England clothed as they workout for over 18 years. Their stated goal is to empower women through fitness. Opening spring this year.

Carrying books, newspapers and magazines for readers of all ages, and offering impeccable service, I recommend stopping in and picking up a classic, or soon-to-be classic, when next you find yourself in search of a good bookstore.
SERENA & LILY
Original textiles. Great design sense. Inspired family spaces. All words used to describe Serena & Lily. Founded in 2003 by Serena Dugan and Lily Kanter, and headquartered in Sausalito, this home goods and lifestyle brand definitely brings a California-inspired point of view to all of its many offerings.
